EXPLOITATION OF CRETAN CHESTNUT GENETIC RESOURCES FOR INTRODUCTION OF HIGH ADDED VALUE PRODUCTS TO THE MARKET

CRETAN CHESTNUT

The main objective of the project is the characterization of the 4 chestnut varieties of the prefecture of Chania (Strovliani, Katharokastania, Koutsakera and Rogdiani), their registration, the investigation of the possibilities of each one for the production of processed products. With the medium-term objective of making available at least 4 of distinct products in relation to the one product, Chania chestnut, which is traded today. In addition, plants of 4 varieties will be produced for pilot cultivation in the prefecture of Chania.

The operational plan is being implemented within the framework of Measure 16 “Cooperation”, Sub-Measure 16.1-16.2 “Cooperation for environmental projects - Environmental practices and actions for climate change”, Action 2 of the Rural Development Programme of Greece 2014-2020.

Apart from CIHEAM-MAICh (Coordinator), the operational team of the project includes the Mills of Crete, the Agricultural Cooperative of Palaia Roumata and the SME “Anaptixiaki Etairia Ennia Choria”.
