Ecotoxicology

Aims

To provide background in in écotoxicologie, on the environmental impacts of pesticides and on assessment of risk presented by pesticides  

Prerequisites

Notions of plant protection, knowledge in chemistry
 
  

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to understand the fate and the action of pollutants in general, and pesticides in particular, in the environment. The will be able to assess the risk induced by pollutants and pesticides both on environmental and human health  

Syllabus

Basis of Ecotoxicology: I. Definitions.  II. The pollutions. III. Classification of pollutants.  IV. Fate of pollutants. The pesticides: I. Physico-chemical aspects of pesticides. II. Pesticide treatments III. Fate of pesticides in the environment IV. Fate of pesticides in the organisms. Effects of pesticides: I. Levels of action of pesticides II. Impacts of pesticides on agro- and ecosystems. Pesticides and organic agriculture: Definition of organic agriculture. Overview of the economic and environmental constraints. Plant protection in organic farming. Substances used in OF. Toxicity of substance used, regulatory aspect and toxicology. Unpredictable effects of substances used. Different study cases.  

Content Delivery

The information will be delivered according to the sequence described just above. The teaching strategy is based on an autonomous course in which the information complexity increase progressively to reach a high level allowing the student to understand complex notions, to solve unexpected problems and to develop a critical mind.  

Coursework And Assignment Details

- Study cases will be studied during the course - The written examination will involve a multiple choice questionnaire (coeff. 8), a course question (coeff. 6) and a problem to solve (coeff 6). - In the exam, the ability to present, describe and interpret experimental data will be judged.
