Project Summary
Develops an integrated system of innovative methodological tools to trace, certify and authenticate olive oil and edible olives using three complementary state-of-the-art technologies.
Actions
- Develop rapid DNA tests for molecular identification of olive and olive oil varieties
- Develop rapid DNA test strips to check for adulteration of olive oil with other vegetable oils and adulteration of monovarietal oil with oils of other varieties
- Create tools to certify the geographical origin of olive oil and olives using mass spectrometry
- Prepare a mobile phone application to identify olive fruit based on morphological characteristics
Goals
- Enable easy, accurate identification of olive and olive oil type, origin and authenticity
- Help reduce adulteration of Greek olive oil with cheaper vegetable oils
- Help protect consumers and producers from fraud
